In Africa beads or shells were added to netting to create a popular musical rattle instrument called a shekerie. The shekerie is still a popular instrument in many countries around the world. When the gourd is shaken or slapped, the beads strike the gourd shell and make a pleasing, rhythmic sound. The netting on this shekerie is waxed linen and the beads are turquoise glass. The gourd is waxed and polished. Handcrafted by Joanne Reed. Measures approximately 9x3-inches. Ready to ship.
